Blizzard brings the addon changes from Midnight to WoW Forever

The addon changes from Midnight will also be active in World of Warcraft: Forever. Blizzard announced that in the WoW UI Discord, reports Wowhead. Forever shares the interface architecture of modern WoW, including secrets and the new aura containers.

What Blizzard says

Blizzard treats Forever and modern WoW as two game types within the same code family, and says the internal name of the Forever type changes before launch.

WoW Forever shares Mainline WoW’s UI architecture, including the vast majority of APIs available in 12.1.5.

The addon disarmament changes introduced in Midnight, including secrets, will also be active in Forever.

The AuraContainer/AuraButton changes introduced in 12.1.0 will be available as well, and you can expect similar UI changes in the future to be introduced to both Standard and Forever.

What changes for addons

The addon disarmament from Midnight covers secret values. The game hides information that addons could read before, so that an addon no longer gives a competitive advantage, writes Wowhead.

That goal has been criticised throughout the Midnight beta, and players keep finding ways around it, writes Wowhead. Blizzard handles those case by case and has also improved the base interface.

The AuraContainer and AuraButton changes from patch 12.1.0 come along too. Blizzard says players can expect later interface changes in both game types.

Addons written for WoW Classic will probably have to be rebuilt, and addons from Midnight can be carried over more easily, writes Wowhead.

The reaction

WeakAuras stopped its development before Midnight and nearly every addon had to be updated for the new interface, writes Wowhead. The account of WeakAuras posted the announcement on X on 15 September.

Player Luckyone961 summed the announcement up on X a day later.

We got confirmation World of Warcraft: Forever will be based on 12.1.5 and have secrets as well as aura containers. We should also expect to see future retail updates/restrictions to apply to Forever.

Which further changes Blizzard will make to the addon interface, and when, is not known.
