Zone refreshes warn you five minutes in advance
World of Warcraft: Forever warns players before a forced layer change. A notification says a zone refresh is coming and gives five minutes to reach a safe spot, Wowhead writes. Until now such a change simply happened.
What a layer is
Every zone exists as several identical copies, and a player is put into one of them on entering. That spreads the load: if everyone stood in the same copy of Elwynn Forest, the servers would buckle. Each copy then runs on its own, and grouping up usually moves players to the same one. The number of copies goes up and down with how busy a zone is.
Why the moment matters
What the new layer looks like is not known in advance. The mobs you just cleared can all be alive again and attack at once. Or everything is dead and you land in a crowd. Quest mobs and pickups can disappear, and new herb and mining nodes can appear.
That is the whole point of the warning: five minutes is enough to walk to a road or a town instead of being caught mid-pull.
The Refresh Now button
The notification carries a button. Stand somewhere safe, click Refresh Now, and the change happens right away instead of at the end of the five minutes.
Clicking Okay hides the notification. An arrow then stays near the chat box on the left of the screen, with the time that is left. Clicking the arrow brings the notification back, and Refresh Now is still there.
Built for Hardcore
At BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard said the technology was made with Hardcore players in mind, where a forced change at the wrong moment can mean the end of a character. The option is open to everyone, not only on Hardcore realms.
