Blizzard plans a new raid tier every four months
World of Warcraft: Forever gets a new raid tier about every four months, or 17 weeks. Principal game designer Kris Zierhut says so in an interview. PvP seasons follow the same rhythm, and smaller unlocks fill the months in between.
Why four months
The patch cycle of eight weeks in retail feels too fast, according to Zierhut, while more than six months without new content makes a game feel stale. Season of Discovery tried a rhythm of eight to ten weeks, and that “felt way, way, way too fast”. After those tests, Blizzard settled on about 17 weeks: three major updates a year.
Between the raids
Patch day is not the only moment with something new. Smaller patches can bring new leveling content, profession updates or new game modes such as Hardcore. A calendar of timed events also unlocks things one, two or three months into a cycle, so not everything arrives at once. A story can leave loose threads that a later patch finishes.
PvP seasons
PvP gets seasons of four months too. Reaching Rank 14 in a season unlocks new cosmetics and strong gear. That is calmer than retail, but faster than some Classic era expansions, where six months or more passed between raid tiers.
What that means for 2027
The first raids open on 9 December: Blizzard details the three raids of 9 December. The roadmap shows new raids in the spring and summer of 2027. At the same pace, a third major update would follow in late autumn 2027, although Blizzard has not announced that.
