Molten Core will be more than tank and spank

Molten Core will not stay the raid players know from 2004 and 2019. In episode 5 of the official podcast, Senior Game Designer Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield hints that you will not just tank and spank Golemagg. What changes, Blizzard does not say yet.

The question came from host Josh Corbett of Countdown to Classic, after 1 hour and 16 minutes of the End of Beta Special. With more than 20 new bosses in Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit, he asked whether Molten Core gets new mechanics or stays “pedestrian mode Molten Core”.

Little to share, one hint

The developers first kept it close: “We don’t have too much to share about Molten Core quite yet.” Then Aggrend added:

I think it’s probably pretty safe to say you’re not just going to stand there and tank and spank Golemagg, for example. There might be a little more to it.

The panel then recalled the word Blizzard used at BlizzCon: “revamped”, or “reimagined”.

Revamped on the roadmap

The official roadmap lists a “revamped iconic raid” for summer 2027, next to a new raid. Which raid that is, Blizzard has not said. Molten Core has no date yet.

The new raids come first. On 9 December Barrow Deeps opens for 10 players, Hyjal Summit for 20 and Onyxia’s Lair for 40, see the three raids of 9 December. The old five-player dungeons stay largely as they were. The new ones should feel as if the team of 2004 could have made them, says Lead Encounter Designer Michael Nuthals.
