Blizzard explains how Hardcore changes in WoW Forever at the What's Next panel

Blizzard talked about the future of Hardcore at the What’s Next panel of BlizzCon 2026. Two changes are new for World of Warcraft: Forever. The game warns players before a world refresh, and a character that dies can move to any non-Hardcore mode.

Until now a dead Hardcore character was moved to a PvE realm. In Forever the player chooses the mode, writes Wowhead in its liveblog.

Where Hardcore comes from

Hardcore grew out of the community and its addons, said Blizzard. Season of Mastery started the push, and the community event Road to Ragnaros followed. Developers played by the ruleset themselves, the team tracked how many players did the same, and that led to official support.

Hardcore in Forever

The changes to tradeskills, the extra preparation, and the collectibles and better items from dungeons and quests make Hardcore in Forever different from what players know.

The Legacy system adds progress that survives a death: every death leaves account-wide bonuses, a little like a roguelike. Hardcore gets Legacy challenges and perks of its own.

Blizzard also said the team is thinking about Mak’gora tournaments. Nothing about that is confirmed.

Hardcore is not switched on at launch.
