Major updates follow about every four months

World of Warcraft: Forever aims for a major update about every four months, three a year. Principal Game Designer Kris Zierhut said so in an interview with IGN, a week before launch. Retail World of Warcraft brings new content every eight weeks with Midnight.

We’re fairly convinced the correct rate is something closer to once every four months or 17 weeks or three times a year.

Faster felt too fast

Season of Discovery tried a faster pace, says Zierhut. That was cut back to eight or ten weeks between updates, and even that felt far too fast. The other side is just as clear to the team: six or eight months without anything new always feels bad, he says. He points to the 13 months without new content during Warlords of Draenor.

Content in between

Between the major updates content keeps coming. Zierhut speaks of an event calendar that gradually unlocks things over those four months. What that calendar holds, he does not say.

The first update

The official roadmap puts the first content update in spring 2027, after the three raids of 9 December. A date is not known. In summer 2027 a new raid and a revamped iconic raid follow, which might be Molten Core. WoW Forever launches on 4 November.
