Free and paid leveling help compared

Leveling help for WoW Classic comes in two kinds. Free addons show quests and objectives, or follow routes that other players wrote. Paid guides give a complete route, step by step, and keep it up to date. The right choice depends on how much planning you want to do yourself.

Free help

  • Questie shows every available quest, its givers and its objectives on the map and the minimap. It is free and widely used. It does not choose an order: you decide which quests to do and where to go.
  • Guidelime shows routes step by step inside the game. The addon is free, and the routes come from the community, so their quality and coverage vary.
  • RestedXP gives routes built for fast leveling, written by speedrunners, with separate routes for Hardcore. See RestedXP and Zygor compared.
  • Zygor combines leveling guides with advice on gear and talents and guides for dungeons, reputations and more.

What the difference comes down to

Free addons Paid guides
Quest markers on the map Yes Yes
A complete route in order Only with a good community route Yes
Arrow to the next step Guidelime, with a route Yes
Updates after patches Depends on volunteers Maintained by the company
Cost None A purchase or a subscription

There are no independent measurements of how much time a paid guide saves. The gain is mainly less planning: the route decides the order, so you spend less time on the map.

When free is enough

  • You level one character and enjoy finding your way.
  • You already know the zones well from earlier versions.
  • A good Guidelime route exists for your faction and version.

When paid help makes more sense

  • You level several characters, where the same planning would repeat every time.
  • You want to reach the level cap quickly, for example before a new phase opens.
  • You play on a Hardcore realm and want a route that avoids risky areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can Questie and a paid guide be used together?

Yes. Questie shows quests on the map, and a paid guide shows the order. Some players keep both, although two sets of markers can make the screen busy.

Are free Guidelime routes as good as paid ones?

Some are very good, others are old or incomplete. The quality depends on who wrote the route and when it was last updated.

Does a guide make the game less fun?

For some players, finding their own way is the fun part; for others, the fun starts at the level cap. A guide saves planning, but it also takes away exploring. Both choices are fine.

Do paid guides cover every version of WoW Classic?

It differs per guide and per version. Check the store of the addon for which versions and factions a purchase includes.
