The Hall of Thanes holds four bosses and five quests
The Hall of Thanes is the first new dungeon most Alliance players meet in World of Warcraft: Forever. It lies in Old Ironforge, for levels 13 to 18. Wowhead has published a walkthrough of its four bosses and five quests.
The walkthrough comes from Jurdi, who writes about Paladins for Wowhead and tanked the dungeon on the beta. The first seven minutes of his video explain the dungeon, the rest is a full run. The final boss is level 16, so a group that enters at 13 has a hard time.
Where it is
The door to Old Ironforge is on the left just inside the High Seat, writes Wowhead. A path leads down to the portal. The Hall is the resting place of the great Dwarves of the Eastern Kingdoms, and the Dark Iron Dwarves have broken in with their mole machines.
The dungeon is the Alliance counterpart of Ragefire Chasm. The Horde can go in, but has a long way to go: from Tarren Mill through the Arathi Highlands, the Wetlands and Loch Modan to Dun Morogh, and then past the guards of Ironforge. A faster route has not been found. After a wipe the Spirit Healer is close, just outside the city.
Five quests
Two quests start just outside the dungeon, two inside, and the fifth begins in Dun Morogh. Each gives between 3,900 and 4,900 experience, writes Wowhead. Monsters inside give very little: Jurdi saw 28 to 30 experience per kill.
- Important Heirlooms, from Thom Filch in Old Ironforge: collect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms. They appear after the first boss, and the vaults in the last room, the Reliquary of Kings, hold enough for a full group.
- The Restless Dead, from Afadra Dunwall in Old Ironforge: clear the spirits in the first part of the dungeon.
- Old Ironforge Incursion: defeat the final boss. This is the main quest. It starts with A Visitor to Dun Morogh from Beldin Steelgrill at Steelgrill’s Depot, which leads to Earthseer Farsen near the Gol’Bolar Quarry. A Dark Iron Map from the Dark Iron Dwarves there opens the dungeon quest.
- An Ancient Grudge, from a Ghostly Attendant in Anvilmar’s Rest, inside: defeat the first boss.
- The Treaty of Understanding, from a vault in the Reliquary of Kings after the final boss. It goes to Magni Bronzebeard.
Every quest step by step, with the coordinates of the chain in Dun Morogh, is in the guide to the Hall of Thanes quests.

| Reward | Type | Quest |
|---|---|---|
| Ironforge Greathammer | Two-handed mace | Old Ironforge Incursion |
| Deepblaze | Wand | Old Ironforge Incursion |
| Dwarven Tome | Off-hand | Important Heirlooms |
| Catacomb Cloak | Cloak | An Ancient Grudge |
Who may take the quests is not clear. The news article of Wowhead calls all five Alliance only. The dungeon guide on the same site makes an exception for Important Heirlooms and An Ancient Grudge.
Four bosses
Faldrim Anvilmar is a ghost who patrols Anvilmar’s Rest. Clear a spot in the room and pull him there, away from the trash. He casts Mind Blast and puts Anvilmar’s Curse on the tank for 10 minutes, which slows attacks and spells by 20%, says Jurdi. Someone who can remove a curse makes this easier. He drops the Spiritwraith Drape, the Ephemeral Choker and the Aetherwisp Bracers.
Magmatus is a fire elemental with a Dark Iron Summoner at his side. Kill the Summoner first and let the tank drag Magmatus away from the group, because he sets off a fire nova now and then. Combust hits a random player hard. A patrolling Summoner is best taken out before the pull. He drops a dagger with spell power, says Tim Jones in the first developer podcast.
Plunder patrols a hallway and has one ability: Knock Away, which throws a player far. Pull him to a spot where nobody lands in a pack of trash, with the group against a wall.
Durgen Dirgehammer is the final boss, with two Lesser Stone Golems at his side and Dark Iron Looters along the edges of the room. His Fear sends players into those Looters, so clear them first. The Golems do pull the boss. He also puts Rend on the tank, which ticks for 44 damage, says Jurdi. A Golem killed before a wipe does not come back, so every next try is easier. His Durgen’s Crescent Axe is the notable drop.
The trash hits hard
The first part of the dungeon is easy, writes Wowhead. The Dark Iron side is not. Looters attack fast with daggers, Engineers throw bombs at a spot that can be dodged, and Summoners cast Fireball and call up a Fiery Assistant. Pull the Summoners around a pillar, out of sight, so they have to come closer.
The Lesser Stone Golems hit hardest and move fast. The last pack before the final boss holds a Summoner, a Looter and a Golem together. Crowd control such as Polymorph helps, and stuns such as Hammer of Justice too. Healers draw a lot of threat at these levels, says Jurdi.
After the final boss a switch in the back vault opens the locked doors, so the way out is short. All four bosses have voice acting.
