Entrance. The Alliance goes in through a pipe from Cantrips & Crows in the Dalaran Sewers. The Horde enters through a tunnel outside the city, at /way 8.8 59.6. One player in the group needs the Dalaran Sewer Key.

Getting there

Alliance. The first time, it is a long ride from Hillsbrad Foothills to the city. Inside Dalaran, go to Cantrips & Crows in the Dalaran Sewers, open the gate and follow the pipe to the portal. More about the city in the post about Dalaran on the beta.

Horde. The Horde is not welcome in the city and enters through a tunnel outside it, at /way 8.8 59.6, where the Image of Archmage Modera grants access. At least one player needs the Dalaran Sewer Key to open the gate. From The Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest it is a few minutes on foot.

The city now attacks Horde players on sight, and the chain for the Dalaran Sewer Key no longer gives free access to the city in the open world. The way into the dungeon stays the same (more).

The Dalaran Sewer Key

The Alliance gets the key with a single quest: An Alarming Request, from level 30, from Emissary Jacques in the town hall of Southshore, sends you to Image of Archmage Modera outside the city, and her Heart of Disruption gives the key. The Horde earns the Dalaran Sewer Key with a chain from Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad Foothills, from level 30: five quests, plus two optional ones. Both quest givers stand in the town. Content creator Farmerfarms shows the whole chain in a video.

First, take three quests.

Quest From Task
Prison Break In Magus Wordeen Voidglare Find the traitors and recover their artifacts
Key to the City Magus Wordeen Voidglare Get the Grimy Key
Stone Tokens Keeper Bel’varil Bring 10 Worn Stone Tokens

Hand them in, then take the next two.

Quest From Task
Dalaran Patrols Magus Wordeen Voidglare Kill 6 Dalaran Summoners and 8 Elemental Slaves
Bracers of Binding Keeper Bel’varil Bring 4 Bracers of Earth Binding

Hand those in too, and the chain moves to the city.

Quest From Task
Blood in the Streets Magus Wordeen Voidglare Hand it in to Image of Archmage Modera outside Dalaran
Heart of Disruption Image of Archmage Modera Collect the Arcane Mote inside the City of Dalaran

The four traitors of Prison Break In stand in and around the Lordamere Internment Camp: Dermot and Alina in the house without a roof at /way 18.4 91.4, Ricter in the yard in front of it at /way 19.5 91.2, and Kegan Darkmar on the upper floor of the house outside the palisade at /way 16.7 89.3. The Grimy Key for Key to the City lies in the Warden’s Footlocker on the ground floor of that same house, guarded by Warden Belamoore. The traitors always drop their piece but respawn slowly.

Stone Tokens and Bracers of Binding are optional: you do not need them for the key. The tokens drop rarely from Dalaran Theurgists and Dalaran Shield Guards, which are rare themselves, and the Shield Guards reflect melee damage with Violent Shield. After Heart of Disruption, Shrewd Negotiations sends the Arcane Mote back to Modera; the Horde gets no access to the city itself, only a promise for the future.

Heart of Disruption gives the key. Four of the quests come from Classic: Prison Break In, Stone Tokens, Dalaran Patrols and Bracers of Binding. Key to the City, Blood in the Streets and Heart of Disruption are new in Forever. More in the post about the key.

Important trash

Arcane damage. Once you leave the sewers, much of the damage is Arcane, melee attacks included. Warrior and Paladin tanks block far fewer hits. Bring plenty of water if the group has few interrupts, because several monsters burn mana.

Arcane immunity. Almost every monster ignores Arcane damage, so Arcane Explosion and Arcane Shot do little and Counterspell does not interrupt.

Mana Phantoms cast a nasty Mana Burn on their target. They are not elite: interrupt or stun them and kill them first.

Fallen Mages and Fallen Warriors. The Mages cast Frostbolt on their target, so pull them around a corner. The Warriors use Hamstring.

Kirin Tor Necromancers keep raising skeletons until they die, and Unholy Frenzy gives them and their skeletons 75% attack speed for 20 seconds.

Seeking Remnants and Saturated Remnants. Seeking Remnants see through stealth. Saturated Remnants hit with Arcane damage, which cannot be blocked, and leave a field behind when they die that restores mana to anyone standing in it.

Phantasms put Reflection Field on themselves or an ally, a shield that reflects every spell back at the caster.

Fragmented Sentries hit everyone in front of them with Arcing Smash.

The bosses

Atrexis the Grave Knight

The first boss, at the Ritual Circle in the middle of the Underbelly, with three Kirin Tor Necromancers nearby; kill a couple of them before you pull him. He disarms the tank, keeps raising skeletons and gives himself and his allies Unholy Frenzy. He hits the tank hard: kill the first skeletons, then focus on the boss.

Lyn the Ignored, a rare

Lyn the Ignored only appears when summoned. Take the Black Tome from the room of Archmage Arugal in Shadowfang Keep and use it at the Ambermill Leyline Focus, the blue crystal next to Archmage Ataeric in Ambermill (/way 63.4 64.3): it becomes the Tome of Dalaran. In the dungeon, go through the Underbelly past Atrexis the Grave Knight. Before the ramp to the Arcane Anomaly, go straight into the small room and use the tome on the summoning circle. Every step, with screenshots, is in the post about the Tome of Dalaran.

The tome is not used up. After 3 minutes it works again, so a group that wipes can summon Lyn the Ignored once more right away. The boss arrives after a short scene with a nod to Ragnaros, more in the post about the second try.

In the fight the boss keeps raising skeletons, like Atrexis, and casts Shadow Bolt Volley on the whole group. Curse of Thorns hurts the tank every time the tank deals damage: remove the curse if you can.

Arcane Anomaly

Pulled out of a bubble on a terrace after the sewers. It hits hard, and Arcane Bolt hits the tank for about 500 Arcane damage. Focal Blast is an arcane beam that sweeps across the room after a 3-second cast: get out of its path as soon as the cast starts.

Fel Ancient

In Runeweaver Square, at the center of the city, among Suffused Treants. A mana barrier protects him; Grindle Firespark takes it down when you talk to him. Entangle roots a player for 10 seconds and hurts while it lasts. Fel Timbers runs to a player, hits everyone within 5 yards and leaves a green pool of poison. Together they are deadly: leave the pools at once, and Blessing of Freedom removes the roots.

Arcanic Enigma

Two Mana Phantoms start the fight with him: kill them first and stop their Mana Burn with an interrupt or a stun. Manamorph turns a player into an animal for 8 seconds; it is Magic, so dispel it. Druids in Cat Form are immune. His Silence hits everyone around him, so the healer and ranged players stand far away. Arcane Manalings keep spawning: cleave them down, but keep damage on the boss too. He is the kill target of the Alliance quest Power Overwhelming.

Unstable Sentinel

In the trade area of the city. Kill the Angry Tomes that come out of the buildings before you pull him. Arcing Smash hits everyone in front of him, so the tank turns him away from the group. Malfunction winds up for 2 seconds and then hits everyone within 25 yards every 2 seconds for 6 seconds. Ranged players stay beyond 25 yards and melee players run out during the cast; a stun before the cast stops it.

Shade of the Archmage

The final boss, in the Purple Parlor at the top of the Violet Citadel. Talk to the NPC in front of the Violet Citadel in the northwest of the city to be teleported up; the Shade appears when you enter. Arcane Bolt hits the tank hard. Bounding Mana sends a sphere of mana out to a player and back, and it hurts and silences everyone in its path for 6 seconds: do not stand between him and that player. Arcane Explosion follows and hits everyone within 20 yards. When his mana runs dry, he casts Mass Polymorph on the whole group for 8 seconds and refills it with Evocation, and the fight starts over. Spread out, keep the casters at range and hide behind the wall during Mass Polymorph. If anyone leaves the room, he resets to full health.

Mana Devourer

Clear the whole room before the pull, because every monster left alive joins the fight. Drain Vitality deals Arcane damage over time to the tank, and Debilitate deals Arcane damage to everyone and drains 200 mana from each player. Kill him quickly, before the group runs out of mana.
